Why is 1Password interested in passkeys?

Not only are they a great idea, they’re also an open standard with the critical industry support they need to succeed.

That’s why we joined the FIDO Alliance, which includes other passkey supporters like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, and are committed to supporting the passwordless login credential.

If passwords are going away, do I still need a password manager?

Yes! How do passkeys protect against phishing and social engineering attacks?

Phishing occurs when a hacker tries to trick you into giving away sensitive information, like your passwords or credit card number. Passkeys are an excellent defense against phishing because there’s no plaintext password or ‘secret’ that you can be tricked into sharing. This is one of the reasons why passkeys are more secure than traditional passwords.

How do I use a passkey?

Signing in with a passkey couldn’t be more straightforward. First, open the login page or select the sign in button on the website or app. You’ll then see a prompt to complete an authentication step. This will usually be with biometrics via Touch ID, Face ID, or Windows Hello. If you’re unable to use biometrics, the system will request the PIN or password that you normally use to unlock your device. You’ll then be signed in to the account!

Do passkeys replace two-factor authentication?

If you’re protecting an account with a passkey, you don’t need to enable two-factor authentication. Why? Passkeys already incorporate two factors: Something you have (the device your passkey is stored on), and something you are (biometrics) or know (device passcode or PIN). As a result, each passkey has multi-factor authentication built in.

Should I use passkeys at work?

Passkeys are an effective way to secure work-related accounts that aren't protected by single sign-on (SSO). It's a good idea to talk to someone from your organization’s IT or security team before you start using them though.

Where and when can I start using passkeys in 1Password?

Passkey support is available now in 1Password! You can save and sign in with passkeys using the desktop version of 1Password in the browser, as well as 1Password for iOS on devices running iOS 17 or iPadOS 17. In addition, you can view, manage, and share your saved passkeys with 1Password for Mac, iOS, Windows, and Android.
